American Violet: Predictable but Rousing

"American Violet" is a typical social-issue movie. It is incredibly simple and reduces almost every character to pure good or pure bad. Here we have evil racists versus saintly people of color.

But there is no doubt some truth to this story of a working-class black woman in Texas standing up to a racist power structure. It is "based on a true story," as all social-issue movies must be nowadays, it seems. If only I had a dollar for every time I've seen "based on a true story" in the marketing material for a movie.

As social-issue movies go, "American Violet" is relatively good.
